Quantitative
research is all about the numerically measurable data. An example of
quantitative research is the surveys and is usually related to data on the
market such as size, growth and market shares.
Qualitative
Research is about finding information. Their main purpose understands the
behaviour of the consumers, their perceptions and is obtained by methods to get
detailed responses such as interviews and focus groups.
Primary research
Primary research is a type of research that you can
collect a lot of first-hand type of information. This can happen by interviews,
panels and questionnaires. We can use the methods of questionnaires, interviews
experiments, observations and focus groups.
Primary research is a type of research
that enables to collect a lot of first-hand information regarding my business.
This may occur by interviews, panels and questionnaires. In order to collect
the proper information I can use the methods of questionnaires, interviews
experiments, observations and focus groups.
There are various methods which are
used during Primary Research.
Focus group is a group of people talking about an
idea, view and comment if will be effective or not. Focus Group is a
type of research that gives us more specific information. Usually a number of
at most 6 people are asked in a close conversation. The disadvantage is that if
the conversation is about an important matter it is very common people duo to
they are pressured not to give the real answers. Focus groups are a qualitative
type of research.
Questionnaires helps us
find out information about a specific group of people or random people, what
they prefer and why. The advantages of using questionnaires are that they are
faster, you can collect a lot of data and they can focus on a specific subject.
Also they can be both quantitative and qualitative. However questionnaires need
a lot of time to examine the data and the answers are small. Questionnaires are a quantitative type of
research.
Observation is having some people observing an area
and sees which criteria are required by people to buy a product. Observation
is a research that is watching people reaction and activities which help us
make a conclusion. It can happen in a control situation or in a real life situation
(e.g. watching people shopping in a supermarket). Observation is usually a
qualitative type of research.
Sampling method is the
section of the population which will be asked question or will use a sample
products for primary research. There are
different sampling methods:
Quota sampling-people with certain
characteristics
Random sampling-random people are
asked without considering their characteristics
Stratified sampling-people with a
common characteristic
Cluster sampling-target population
which is divided into groups and random sample is taken from them
However, primary research has not only
advantages but also disadvantages
·
Some people won’t
reply at letters and emails
·
When the research
is completed it may be out of date
·
When a lot of
people need to contact the whole process may be very expensive
Secondary research
Secondary research is data which already exists and has
been found by someone else for other purposes and is publicly available. Some
sources of secondary research contain internet, newspapers, magazines, media
and books like encyclopaedia.
The advantages of secondary research are that it usually takes less time therefore the cost is less, all the
data are collected for you and are easy to find and may help clarify research
question. The disadvantages of secondary research are that the data might not
be updated, may not be specific and may include incorrect data. Also some
resources might have copyright and don’t have the permission to be published.
It can be considered either as a quantitative or
qualitative research. The cost of secondary research is very low and sometimes
is free and is cheaper compared to the other methods.
